For our April Inox breakfast networking meeting we will be introducing Abi Golland as our guest speaker who will be talking on a subject that has become very topical, urgent, hugely significant to us all & critical to our mission & ethos at The University of Sheffield.

Abi will be speaking about the mission to eradicate single-use plastic from business and how companies can bring about change by putting pressure on their suppliers.

Abi Golland started The Street Food Chef with husband Richard in 2010; the organisation has used compostable plates & biodegradable bags since its launch day.

The main single-use culprits were disposable cutlery, straws, coffee cups, milkshake cups & small salsa pots. Items were switched to paper or biodegradable & compostable versions. After a protracted search, Abi sourced products made from corn and vegetable starch – via a supplier whose mission is to only use materials that are kinder to the environment; her next focus is to remove single-use plastic from her kitchens. The company encourages customers to change their plastic habits and has just introduced a 25p discount on takeaway meals & drinks to people bringing their own cup & container.

Abi & Richard set up The Street Food Chef after identifying a gap in the market for a restaurant that served quick & healthy fast food. Initially they planned to launch with a healthy take on American favourites but instead looked south to Mexico. The Golland’s did their research, discovered the vast array of fresh, healthy ingredients which went into burritos, tacos, chillies & wraps – tomatoes, avocados, beans, coriander, chilli’s & lime etc.

The restaurant’s ethos has always been to offer a tasty & healthy alternative to fast food, using authentic vital ingredients brought in from Mexico & produce from some of the best local producers within Sheffield City Region eg. Moss Valley Meats.  In its first five years the company won five food accolades in the Eat Sheffield Awards.
